Added second primary fuel filter

(pictures will be added when I have time to sit down for more than a minute)

Pete was on hand and thought it would be a really good idea to add a second primary fuel filter to the engine fuel circuit, plumbed in parallel via a valve, such that when one filter clogs up from bad fuel or sloshing around during a storm, one can flip the valve to the new filter without the engine stopping–and then have time to change the clogged filter.  Initially I balked because I thought the cost would be prohibitive, but when I discovered that another nice racor filter would only be $150 (and I wouldn’t have to deal with the installation part at all, with Pete around), I decided it was a good idea.

I have two racor filters installed on a T valve and buy the filters in a box lot of 12 if I remember correctly, a lot less expensive that way.

I know of one boat ( friend) who was caught in a storm between Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta and burned himself badly in the engine room while replacing his one fuel filter that got blocked with dirty fuel stirred up while trashing about in the storm.

I have filtered my diesel with a portable ( build on a hand truck) fuel filtering device but there is no way to get into the tank corners or stir the fuel up enough to do a real good job. I have given serious thought to installing a inspection/cleaning out plate on the forward vertical face of tank near fuel pickup fitting.

  2. yes, we ended up doing that as well–the double racor setup that is. Definitely a good way to go, we used it multiple times. Perhaps a post never went up about it.

    Hi Matt
Read something you wrote about refurbishing a Profurl furling system. I have an old one (1988-92? maybe a c31 or P31) which seems to have split the lower furling unit bearing (thus dropping the lower housing section and leaving the foil/furlingdrumand section of 40mm tube attached.

You mentioned that Chris Zinger sent you some detailed instructions and I wondered whether you could forward them so I can have a go at tackling it?

I went to the boat this weekend in some atrocious weather and managed to look at some of ‘the challenge’ after removing the housing attached to the bow temporarily.

    All help greatly appreciated!
    Regards
    Stephen
